Two Concepts of Learning " What and How"
The failure of teaching and learning process in reaching the purposes that was conducted by the teachers now days, was because of the lack of the knowledge, experience, and understanding towards the curriculum practically. The core of curriculum, according to the writer expressed or written in this blog, was the use of "what and how".
a. The Meaning of What
The meaning of "what" in the process of learning can be related to the material and purpose, as will be described below:
1. What Means "Material/Subject" that will be taught
First, before beginning teaching the teacher should know what materials she or he should
teach or convey to his or her students in advance. If the teacher does not perceive what she or he wants to teach, so she or he will encounter a great numbers of difficulties in conveying the
material. There are several items dealing with the materials, first the teacher must master what she
or he wants to teach professionally. Second, The teacher should be able to develop the material
more broadly. Third, the teacher should be able to specify the materials that deliver and reach.
2. What Means "the purpose" that will be reached
A good teacher is the teacher that always makes, writes or determines a purpose before
starting teaching, because purpose for him/her is the most important part in the teaching and learning activity process. The teacher will encounter the difficulties in undertaking the learning
activities if she/he does not make purpose in advance. Therefore, making or determining the
purpose in carrying out the activities, particularly in the teaching and learning process is
very urgent.
Thus", the meaning of "What"" could be related to material of teaching and purpose., like What the teacher wants to teach and reach in the learning activity process.
b. How relates with The Process of Learning and assessment
1. How refers to the Process of Learning
If the teacher had already known the material and purpose of learning, so the next stage is
about the way of how she/he delivers the materials and reach the purpose of learning. The
teacher should be able to select the method or approach that will be used and suitable with
materials.
2. How Means "the way of assessment"
The assessment is one of the instruments used by the teacher to measure the students' knowledge,
competence and the experience in domain. The assessment is an important part in the learning activity process, because the assessment used not only to know or measure the students' competence and experience, but also to measure the teachers' success in teaching.
