Should homework be abolished?, or Is It really Necessary?

Is the Homework really Necessary or Should It be Abolished?

The homework is a part of learning given by the teachers to their students to do at home. The giving of homework  has several reasons, namely; to enhance the students' achievement or learning, reduce the students' unusual activities, and to prevent from the negative effects of environment. Emma S.McDonald states that assigning homework  can be useful in instilling values of self discipline and responsibility. In addition, the teachers usually give the homework to the students because their students  can't complete the task or assignment at school.

The students have different ability in undertaking the assignment. The students who high intelligence automatically can carry out the task successfully; However, for the students who have low intelligence usually get difficulties in completing the assignment; so, for the low students, the homework is really necessary. Educators accept that students have unique cognitive structures  that determine their ability to solve problem  at different points in their development (Jean Piaget and  Lev Vygotsky.

Understanding the students' difficulties or mistakes is a crucial part of the teaching activity process. When the work goes home, teachers have little understanding of the mistakes that students have made  on the material and little control over who does the work. The teachers wonder, did the students undertake their own work?. Did they exchange the answers with friends via the phone or before school? , who undertook the work ?. Therefore, the homework can't be used as main assessment  for the teachers to assess their students' work.

The problems actually are not on the reasons why the teachers give the homework; however, the serious problems are the sum of homework given to the students. Mostly the teachers give the homework too much so that the students are lazy to do it. Even, many school districts limited how much homework could be assigned at various level of schooling and some cities even abolished homework altogether. Troen and Boles point out that parental backlash against the ever -growing burden of homework is clearly  spreading nationwide.

The giving of homework is not only as burden for the students but also for the parents. for students, the homework is one of causes that not only make the students lazy to learned but also leave the school because their inability to complete homework. For the parents, the homework becomes burden especially for the parents  from chaostic family lives, cramped living quarters, and parents who work at night. (by Etta Kralovec and John Buell). Besides, I am sure that the homework can't enhance the students' achievement or learning, becausewe do not know who do the homework, whether their parents, elder brothers and sisters, or their friends. Therefore, in my opinion, the homework should be abolished. What do you think of  the homework?, whether it should be abolished or it is really necessary.
