The Stages of Teaching Speaking Skill
As we know that the students enter into the classroom have different competence and background. Some of them may be come from an educated family, and the others from uneducated family. The students who come from the educated family usually go to school have high or serius wishes to learn. However, the students who come from uneducated family usually have a few wishes to study.
Teaching the speaking skill to the students having great wishes to study is easier than the students who come from uneducated family. Therefore, the teachers shoud know or find the best way to teach speaking skill. There are some stages that can be used to teach the speaking skills to the students, namely: .
a. The first Stage: The Early Speech
In
the early speech stage, the teachers should begin using simple or short English
words, like yes/no answers, one word answers, and two words or phrases.The
example:
Are
you a student? yes, I'm.
What
are you ? a student
who is speaking in front of the classroom? Susan
Who is missing today? Rindu
b. The second Stage : Comprehension of the text
In dealing with the comprehension of the text, there are some items that should be noticed by the teachers when they want to teach the speaking skill to their students, namely:
1. The teachers should be able to create the activities designed to teach the students to recognize the
meaning in words used in the meaning contexts.
2. The teacher should teach the students to guess the meaning of the words or phrases without
knowing all of the words and the structures of the sentences. Then, the teacher should practice
them in communicating with their students.
Besides, there are some items that should be noticed by the teachers to teach their students about speaking skill dealing with the comprehension of the text, such as:
1. The teachers should use visual aids like picture, gestures, etc
2. The teachers should aid understanding/comprehension,
3. The teachers should speak slowly in order the students can perceive what the teachers are talking
4. The teachers should emphasize or pay attention more on the key words
5. The teachers should simplify vocabulary and grammar in speaking in order the students understand
what they are talking about more easily.
6. The teachers should speak by using related ideas with the context.
7. the teachers do not talk out of the context.
c. The Third Stage : Speech Emergence
In
the speech emergence stage, the speech production will enhance or improve the
quality and quantity. The sentence that the students learning become more complex
and longer. Therefore, the teachers should encourage their students to speak English. If their students make mistakes when they are talking, the teachers don't blame or correct, because the conversation will break down. However, the teacher can correct the mistakes at the end of converstion..
There are many
activities that can be done by the teachers to give the opportunities to the
students to practice their language, like:

Thus, the
most important thing in teaching the speaking skill, the teachers should begin from
themselves to speak English with their students in the classroom, and then encourage them to
communicate with English. Tell to the students "Don't be afraid of making mistakes in speaking or communicating,
and don't correct the students' mistakes when they are talking or speaking, because the conversation will make break down.
