The Ways of Unlocking and Developing Students' Critical Thinking in Learning
Each student entering into the classroom has different competence and preparation, some of them may be come to school having high motivation to study; however, the other students on the contrary, come to school because of their parents, or just want to meet their friends, etc. The diverse conditions, of course, have huge effects in developing the students' critical thinking. Therefore; the teachers should know the ways of how to unlock and develop the students' thinking. There are some ways to unlock and develop the students' thinking that can be carried out by the teachers, namely:
1. Encourage the Students to Express or Deliver their Thought in Learning
Encouraging the students to express their thought in learning is an urgent pathway because it can emerge the students' bravery , self-confidence, and intrinsic motivation. Give the chance to the students to express their opinian Every student has a similar right in learning or in education. They go to school or come into the classroom to study; therefore, the teachers should treat them similarly without picky between stupid students and brilliant students. In addition, the teachers should realize that the students have diverse competence. some of them have high motivation, ability or thinking, meanwhile, the others have high ability or thoughts. Thus, the teachers have to respect and encourage their students to express their ideas
This is the example of how the teacher unlocks and develops the students' critical thinking.
The teacher is guiding and instructing all of her students to carry out the task wisely and attentively , and the students undertake confidently. The self- confidence that motives the students to unlock and develop the students' critical thinking. The teachers must also encourage or support, give the chance to the students to express their thoughts in learning, respect them although their thoughts are not correct.
We should remember that if the teachers often blame their students' opinion, so don't hope their students dare to express their opinion although they force them. Thus, the change or success of the students' learning depend on the teachers' way or behavior or mind towards their students. If the teachers have growth mindset when teaching, so the students' self-confidence, braveness, motivation and achievement and critical thinking skill will undergo the significant progress.
2. Use attractive Stimuli
Stimuli are very urgent parts in the teaching and learning process to attract the students' motivation , interest and critical thinking skill; however, the teachers should be able to select suitable stimuli. Since, if the stimuli are not suitable with the material, etc, they will not be attractive and useful that can unlock the students' critical thinking. for example, if the teachers teach about natural disaster/ flood, so they should use stimuli dealing with natural disaster/ flood.
with this stimuli we can instruct the students to observe or notice the flood and then ask them to make questions about the causes and effects of the flood itself. After that, the teachers can ask them to look for solution how to overcome the flood. This stimulus of course can unlock and develop the students' critical thinking, especially, when they think about cause and look for solution.3. Use Appropriate Methods and model of Leaning
To unlock and develop the students' critical thinking, the teachers should be able to select the appropriate methods and models of learning or strategies. There are some methods and models of Learning that can be used to unlock develop the students' critical thinking, such as :
1. Question technique
2. Students led Discussion
3. Inquiry based Learning
4. Collaboration
5. Problem Based Learning
The methods, models of learning, or strategies above can be used to unlock and develop the students' critical thinking. However, the teachers should know how to use the methods or the models of learning above well. Such as the use of question techniques, the teachers have to be able to make questions that needs high thinking, not the questions that measure the competence of understanding or remembering. for example of the question for high thinking " what do you think about the flood happening in the middle of the city?". To answer this question, the students will think critically and analytically about causes and solution of the flood. Thus, the teacher should understand about the five strategies well.
