 A. What is a Simple Present Tense?

The simple present tense is a grammatical tense used to describe actions, events, or conditions that are currently happening, generally factual or habitual, or that exist permanently. It is one of the basic tenses in English and is also called the present simple.

In the simple present tense, the verb remains in its base form (the infinitive without "to"), with the exception of the third-person singular form, which adds an "s" or "es" to the end of the verb.

For example:

I eat breakfast every morning. (first person singular)

She eats breakfast every morning. (third person singular)

The simple present tense is also used for general truths, universal statements, and scheduled events. It is often used with adverbs of frequency, such as always, usually, often, sometimes, and never, to describe the frequency of an action or event.

B. What are the Uses of Simple Present Tense

The simple present tense has several uses in English. Here are some of the most common:

1. To describe habitual or repeated actions:

     Example: I brush my teeth every morning.

2. To describe general truths or facts:

    Example: The sun rises in the east.

3. To talk about future events that are scheduled or planned:

     Example: Our flight to New York leaves at 7 pm tonight.

4. To describe a state or condition that currently exists:

     Example: She loves chocolate.

5. To give instructions or directions:

    Example: First, you take the bread out of the package. Then, you put it in the toaster.

6. To express opinions or feelings:

     Example: I think this movie is boring.

 

7. To report historical or scientific facts:

      Example: Christopher Columbus discovers America in 1492.

8. To provide commentary or analysis:

     Example: The writer suggests that the character's actions are motivated by fear.

Overall, the simple present tense is a versatile tense that is used in a wide variety of contexts to describe actions, states, and events that are currently happening or that are generally true.

C. What are the Pattern of Simple Present Tense

The pattern of the simple present tense is relatively simple, and it is the same for most verbs in English. In the affirmative (positive) form, the pattern is:

Subject + Base form of the verb (infinitive without "to") + Object (if any) For example:

1. I eat breakfast every day.

2. She walks to work.

3. They study for exams.

In the negative form, we add "do not" (don't) or "does not" (doesn't) before the base form of the verb:

Subject + do not/does not + Base form of the verb + Object (if any)

For example:

1. I do not eat meat.

2. She doesn't like coffee.

3. They do not play video games.

In the question form, we invert the subject and the auxiliary verb "do" or "does":

Do/Does + Subject + Base form of the verb + Object (if any)? For example:

1. Do you like pizza?

2. Does she speak French?

3. Do they play soccer?

Note that in the third person singular (he, she, it), we add "s" or "es" to the base form of the verb:

1. He eats breakfast every day.

2. She walks to work.

3. It watches TV all night.

Exercise 1: 

Complete the sentences with the correct form of the verb in the simple present tense.

Exercise 2: Write the negative form of the sentences in simple present tense.

1. I eat breakfast every morning.

Exercise 3: Make an Interrogative Sentence.

1. Maria reads a book every night before bed.

2. John and his sister study at the library on Tuesdays.

Read the following text carefully and Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the verb in the simple present tense!

John works as a teacher at a local school. He enjoys his job and loves teaching children. Every morning, he wakes up at 6:00 am, takes a shower, and eats breakfast. He leaves his house at 7:00 am and walks to school. His classes start at 8:00 am, and he teaches until 3:00 pm. After work, he likes to go to the gym and work out. He usually finishes his workout at 6:00 pm and then goes home. In the evenings, he likes to read books and watch TV.
